Sonia Altizer

UGA Athletic Association Professor of Ecology

Sonia is the head of our research program on monarch parasites. She is a professor at the Odum School of Ecology at UGA. She has been studying monarchs and their parasites for the past 15 years.

Alexa Watson

Graduate Researcher

Alexa is pursuing a master’s of natural resources with a focus in environmental education. She is very passionate about outreach, and hopes to pursue a career working with ambassador animals. In her free time, she enjoys photography, gaming, and spending time with her pets.

Susannah Grant

Marketing Assistant

Susannah is a master's student in advertising and public relations with a background in social media and nonprofit management. Her passion for the outdoors and conservation drives her dedication to making scientific information accessible. As the marketing assistant in the lab, she enjoys translating complex research into engaging content. When not working, Susannah loves spending time in nature, flying planes, and attending concerts.

Paige Robinson

Undergraduate Researcher

Paige is a fourth-year Ecology undergraduate student working towards certificates in Sustainability and GIS. She also works as an intern at the Office of Sustainability, where she focuses on re-certifying UGA as a Bee Campus USA through the Xerces Society and develops & supports various pollinator-related projects around campus. Outside of all the buzz, she enjoys hiking, camping, and crafting.

Emilee Story

Research Professional 

Emilee is a biologist and recent UGA graduate. Her passion for pathology and environmental health led her to return to Project Monarch Health as a research professional, where she enjoys communicating complex scientific ideas to citizen science volunteers. When not in the lab, Emilee finds joy in running and yoga, cooking, painting, and reading.

Kate Kearney

Undergraduate Researcher

Kate is a fourth year pursuing B.S. degrees in biology and ecology. She is a Double Dawgs student in the process of earning her Master’s of Public Health with an emphasis in Epidemiology. Her research interests include disease ecology, population dynamics, global health, infectious diseases, and the interaction between human and environmental health. She has been working in the Altizer lab for over two years.

Skyler DeWitt

Undergraduate Researcher

Skyler is a fourth-year majoring in Ecology and German. She enjoys learning about how ecosystems operate and how even the smallest interactions between organisms can have a profound effect on their environment. She also has been learning German for 8 years and thinks it's important to learn a second language because of the opportunity to communicate with more people. In the Altizer lab, she assists other students with their research projects as well as helps with the ongoing Project Monarch Health.

Julia Berliner

Lab Alumni '23

Julia received her MS in Entomology in 2022 from UGA, where she studied how insect food webs respond to nutrients in the soil. Now, she oversees work in the lab, such as processing samples sent in by volunteers, rearing monarchs, running experiments, leading virtual lab tours with classrooms, and creating the newsletter. In her free time, you can find Julia out dancing or on a nature walk.

Paola Barriga is a Post-doctoral Researcher & Teaching Associate at the Odum School of Ecology. Paola co-directs Monarch Health and has five years of experience working with monarchs and OE. Paola enjoys mentoring undergraduate researchers and working with volunteers.

Henry Adams is a graduate of the Odum School of Ecology who takes particular interest in conservation ecology and scientific illustration and how one can be used to enhance the impact of the other. He is currently a research technician at the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources.

Jaap is a former post-doc in the Altizer lab and is now an assistant professor at Emory University. He also studies OE parasites and contributes to the Monarch Health project.

Stuart works for a group of nonprofits called The Family Resource Center Association based in Denver Colorado. He manages a shared database system among 29 partnering resource families that provide a variety of services to families in need across the state.

After graduating in 2015 with dual degrees in Ecology and Biology, Emilie hiked the Appalachian Trial and interned at UGA's Costa Rica Campus as a naturalist and educator. Emilie is currently applying to medical school and plans to matriculate in the fall of 2018.

Sherayar is originally from Glendale, Arizona and graduated with a B.S. in biology from UGA. He is currently preparing to enter medical school. Sherayar helped manage and process samples for Monarch Health. His research interest lies in disease ecology.

Michael is an expert on butterfly ecology who worked as a lead research professional with the Altizer lab from 2007 to 2012. Michael also worked in the de Roode lab at Emory University. His degree in Entomology is from the University of Georgia.
